about

Christmas organ music recorded at the Wellington Cathedral of St Paul.

Introduction
The fragrance of evergreen Advent wreaths, Christmas trees with real candles, stomping through the snow to Midnight Mass with church bells ringing out into the crisp night air, and cheerful organ music welcoming us in out of the cold – these are my memories of Advent and Christmas spent in Alsace-Lorraine, on the border between France and Germany.

Of course the Advent and Christmas seasons are very different in New Zealand, seasons of heat and light rather than the cold and darkness of the European winter, marked too by the challenges of Christmas shopping and end of year festivities all coming at us at once.

All the more reason, then, to take time to enjoy and appreciate some of the beautiful seasonal music of the organ repertoire, to remind us of the true message of the Advent and Christmas seasons, Christ coming to dwell with us, and to help us prepare our hearts for his coming.

Organ music is an intrinsic part of the worship of Wellington Cathedral of St Paul. This collection of organ music for Advent and Christmas is the first solo recording of the instrument since 2006, and focuses
particularly on the French and German Baroque periods. It is a collaboration between Director of Music Michael Stewart and Assistant Director of Music Richard Apperley, who also takes the credit for the recording engineering. Proceeds from this recording will go towards future rebuilding of the organ. Thank you for your support.
